What is ICSI treatment?
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced form of reproductive procedure performed in an IVF treatment. When male fertility concerns make conception difficult, this procedure offers a trusted path to parenthood. In ICSI treatment, a single sperm is injected into the retrieved egg in a lab setting. The ICSI treatment aids in surpassing barriers to pregnancy such as reduced sperm count, and poor sperm motility, thereby maximizing the chances of fertilization.
When is ICSI treatment considered?
It is crucial for sperm to successfully meet and penetrate the egg for fertilization to occur. Unfortunately, for several reasons, this may not turn out to be successful. ICSI treatment becomes a valuable process in such scenarios. The common reasons ICSI is recommended may include the following,
- Low sperm count
- Sperm motility issues
- Poor sperm morphology
- Ejaculation problems
- Blockage in the male reproductive system
- Irreversible vasectomy
- Paralyzed male partner
- When using frozen sperm, at times after thawing, the sperm may appear inactive.
- When using frozen eggs, at times the process can make the outer shell of the egg harden, thereby making fertilization difficult.
- Previously failed IVF cycles.
- If preimplantation genetic testing is considered to be done, ICSI would be the best option, as the presence of additional sperm near the egg can alter the results.
How is the ICSI Procedure done?
A few steps may appear to be overlapping in IVF and ICSI treatments. Our fertility experts ensure to educate our patients about the procedure during the consultation and provide support throughout the process.
- Egg retrieval: The ovaries are treated to mature several eggs at the same time, which is called the ovarian stimulation. Matured eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a suction device that draws and collects the eggs out.
- Sperm collection: Sperm is collected on the same day the egg is retrieved. It is advisable for men to abstain from sex or ejaculation for a few days before sperm collection. For individuals who have anejaculation, azoospermia, or have had an unsuccessful vasectomy reversal, special procedures like electroejaculation, or microscopic testicular sperm extraction are done to collect the sperm, and for some individuals, the doctors may recommend freezing them. Semen analysis is performed to evaluate sperm mobility, quality, and volume.
- Sperm injection: Immobilization is done to make sure the sperm does not move while handling and helps make the process more controlled. Immobilization does not pose any harm to the sperm. A healthy sperm is picked using a needle and inserted into the egg. The sperm is injected into the egg’s cytoplasm.
- Fertilization: When the sperm has united with the egg (fertilization), it is called an embryo. Our team of experts ensures to closely monitor the embryo for the next few days, to analyze its progress.
- Transfer: The embryo is then transferred into the uterus for implantation to occur. The doctor may suggest to conduct a few tests to confirm pregnancy.

FAQs
Does ICSI treatment guarantee pregnancy?
While ICSI is majorly considered in cases of male infertility, it is known to greatly improve the possibility of fertilization by 50% to 80%. However, it is important to be aware of conditions when fertilization may not occur such as, the eggs not surviving after sperm injection, the sperm head not being decondensed (as a result the DNA remains locked in sperm’s head), or failure of egg activation (where the egg does not respond to the sperm to initiate fertilization).
Is ICSI a safe procedure?
ICSI is considered a very safe procedure, and being a specialized form of IVF, it holds the same risks as IVF. The ICSI specialists at Nakshatra IVF & Women’s Centre, OMR, Chennai are experienced in performing such advanced procedures with high success rates.
What are the benefits of ICSI treatment?
ICSI treatment brings hope to several couples, especially when the male partner experiences infertility issues. It helps raise the bar of successful fertilization and pregnancy and brings back hope for many couples.
Does one’s emotional health affect ICSI treatment?
The emotional aspects of the couple play a primary role in any fertility treatment and impact its success rate. It is highly essential to identify and seek help even if one of the partners experiences emotional imbalance. ICSI treatment may evoke emotions like anxiety and stress for some people and having open conversation with your partner and consultant is recommended. At Nakshatra Fertility Clinic, we believe in providing holistic care to all our patients.
