What is IVF?

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is an effective type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) where the sperm fertilizes the egg in a laboratory setting, outside the human body. IVF was a major breakthrough in treating fertility problems. It is a complex procedure where mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and are manually combined with sperm. After fertilization has occurred, the embryo (fertilized egg) is placed back in the uterus. Pregnancy is confirmed when the embryo successfully implants itself in the uterine wall. IVF is a widely considered infertility treatment for many individuals facing infertility issues. It is also used to forestall transferring genetic disorders to the next generation.

When is IVF Treatment Considered?

People facing difficulty in conceiving or having hereditary disorders consider opting for IVF treatment. There are other treatment options for fertility that involve less or no complex procedures that your doctor might want you to try.

IVF stands as a treatment option for the following conditions as well:

  • Ovulation disorders occur when mature eggs from the ovaries are not released or are released less frequently, and may result in difficulties in getting pregnant.
  • Endometriosis is when tissues similar to the uterus lining grow in other places outside the uterus like fallopian tubes, ovaries, and organs within the pelvis causing severe pelvic pain, and heavy period flows.
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) occurs when eggs do not mature and end up in multiple cysts formation in the ovaries. Missed or irregular periods are a common sign of PCOS and is a common cause of infertility.
  • Blockage or damage of the fallopian tube makes it hard for the eggs to reach the uterus for fertilization.
  • Fibroids or tumors in the uterus cause difficulties for a fertilized egg to implant itself in the uterus lining.
  • If the individual has undergone tubal ligation surgery where fallopian tubes are cut or blocked to prevent pregnancy, IVF may help.
  • Low sperm count and unusual sperm size or shape can pose challenges to fertilizing the egg.
  • Cancer and its treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation may harm fertility. However, IVF stands as an option that can be considered, where eggs are frozen for later use.
  • For some people, the reason for infertility may stay undefined.
  • For people using a gestational surrogate or an egg donor.

What is the duration of the IVF process?

IVF encompasses several steps and is a complex procedure. For the most part, it may last from 4 to 6 weeks but may expand longer depending on multiple factors. The IVF specialists at Nakshatra Fertility Clinic support couples at every stage of their IVF treatment.

What are the screening tests for IVF treatment?

Screening may include a series of medical examinations performed at the beginning of an IVF cycle. These tests are performed to evaluate overall reproductive health, identify factors that may impact the procedure’s success, and understand how the individual’s body might respond to the IVF medicines and procedure. The tests may include

  • Uterine examination
  • Semen analysis
  • Ovarian reserve testing
  • Infectious disease screening
  • Hormone tests

What are the steps of IVF treatment?

At Nakshatra Fertility Clinic, OMR, our experts help patients understand and make informed choices by educating and preparing them for IVF treatment. Our IVF specialists employ advanced technologies to achieve a high success rate for our patients.

  1. Developing matured eggs: Multiple mature eggs are developed using medications in order to reduce error. A hormone shot is usually given to stimulate the ovaries, mature the eggs, prepare the uterus lining, and sometimes delay ovulation (to prevent the eggs from developing too soon).
  2. Retrieval of eggs: Before collecting the eggs, vaginal ultrasound or blood tests are done to know if they are mature and ready to be retrieved. It is a simple procedure that lasts for about 20 to 30 minutes. Post this procedure, it is common to experience feelings of fullness and cramping.
  3. Retrieval of sperm: The sperm can be collected during the day of egg retrieval or can be done ahead and frozen. Follow the doctor’s advice on this. After collection, the sperm are separated from the semen fluid.
  4. Fertilization: Our fertility experts now fertilize the mature eggs with sperm. There are two methods of fertilization which include conventional insemination (where the eggs and sperm are mixed and kept in an incubator) and Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) (where each mature egg is injected with a healthy sperm). When the eggs have successfully fertilized, they become an embryo.
  5. Development of embryo: The embryo is then carefully monitored for the next 5 to 6 days to evaluate its development.
  6. Transfer: The embryo is next implanted into the uterine wall which takes place a week or less after the eggs are collected. The patient is given medicines to stay relaxed and the procedure is usually painless.
  7. Pregnancy: When the embryo has successfully implanted itself into the uterus lining, pregnancy occurs. After a few days, your doctor suggests blood tests to check if you’re pregnant. Some people may require more than one cycle of IVF treatment depending on several factors. Our doctors at Nakshatra Fertility Clinic vouch to guide the patients toward the right path and may suggest alternative treatment options that best suit the individuals.

Follow-Up Care: When the procedure is successful, our doctors extend continuous support until your delivery. It is advisable to be regular with the follow-up consultations for a healthy pregnancy.
